As an Individual - You can assist adoptive families directly or by volunteering at your local church's adoption ministry. If you would like training on how to support an adoptive family, sign up for a P.U.R.E. Class.
-
As a Church-The church is the perfect place to build a family through adoption. Project 1.27 can help train your church to start an adoption ministry or complement an existing ministry for all types of adoptive families (domestic, international, foster system).
-
As a “Lifeline” Family-Every Project 1.27 family is now required (2009+) to recruit two (2) “Lifeline” families. These are families willing to provide a break (short-term respite) to a specific adoptive family at least 2 times a month for 3-4 hours at a time. Adoptive families need friends and family to step up and provide this service. It helps the parents recharge their batteries and feel refreshed again for their children. The Lifeline family also gets the joy of getting to know the children or youth on a regular basis. The children and youth also get to know other adults that care about them and look forward to the visits. We encourage you to reference this time with the child as a “play date” or with a youth as “coming to hang out with us for awhile.”
If you have completed your Project 1.27 training and the county/agency has approved you to adopt or provide foster care:
-
Consider getting “Respite” Qualified
This will allow you to get involved with some of the Project 1.27 families, meet their children or youth and see a little more of what it is like. You would only need to do a little more training in order to be respite qualified. You will already have had the home study, background checks, etc. So, this way you could be a resource for the whole adoption effort. If you are a certified foster family, based on the rules of the county or agency you are qualified through, you may be able to have the child or youth overnight in your home, too.
