While You Wait
We know that the wait is long and it can feel like your life is on hold. Here are a few steps to take so that you may keep moving forward while you wait.
-
Please check for eligibility. Read section 7.701.33 paragraph D of the State “Child Care Rules and Regulations: General Rules” document for details.
- Attend an adoption support group. Once you become a Project 1.27 family, this will be required, but it can also provide support for you through the wait. Most families in the group know just how you feel.
- Get copies made of marriage certificates, divorce decrees, and birth certificates.
- Talk with your family members, friends, Bible study group, etc. Recruit a committed support team to help you on this journey.
- Get your home ready. This includes removing excess clutter, finishing undone projects and cleaning the child’s room.
- Get your financial budget in order.
- Determine how you will manage your time once a child enters your home. Consider setting aside the first year to focus on your new child. Pare down your work schedule, extracurricular activities, moving plans, etc.
- Learn more about the public schools in your area.
- Talk with your biological children about foster care and adoption -this should be a family decision.
- Make friends with and/or visit other fostering and adoptive families and their children.
- Get your pets vaccinated and keep the records.
- Become educated on foster care system issues. These kids have had unique experiences.
- Check in with Project 1.27 to learn about other training classes and resources available around the state. However, remember that you cannot attend Project 1.27 training classes until you both have completed Orientation and completed the commitment forms.
- Come visit us in our Project 1.27 office to check out some of our in office resources-videos, kids pictures, books, etc.
- Come volunteer in our office. Check out our volunteer opportunities on our web site or with us directly.
